Budleigh Salterton Lions Club have been working together with the Deaf Academy to support Deaf Education.

The Deaf Academy based in Exmouth in Devon covers the whole of the South West and is the oldest Deaf School in the UK.

FVDG Richard Allen and Lion Gill Wilson first visited the Deaf Academy in 2023 to give the students a talk about Lions and present them with a set of the Wild Tribe Heroes books.

The Budleigh Lions then teamed up with the Adventurers students who are deaf with additional complex needs to help keep the community clean by picking up litter around Exmouth.

FVDG Richard presented students with certificates of appreciation to acknowledge their environmental work for the community.

The Lions also carried out beach cleans with the Academy’s ‘Eco Club’ and were delighted to have the opportunity to help the Deaf Academy become an Eco-School and achieve the prestigious Green Flag award.

In addition to the environmental work Budleigh Salterton Lions Club donated packs of wildflower seeds, £600 towards specialis sensory equipment for the students to enjoy and £1000 towards the purchase of vibrating backpacks which connect deaf people to the world of sound by translating recorded sound into vibrations.

Most recently the Club has donated £1500 towards a new puffin crossing to enable students to cross the busy road outside the Deaf Academy.
